Harper Watch April 30 to May 2, 2012

TEN articles that I have collected over the past 3 days alone on the Harper regime.   If you have a sick sense of humour, this comment from the CBC online news might resonate with you.   “ For an old retired guy, I’m starting to hate weekends. Not much ever happens. But come Monday and through the course of the week, I can depend on none stop Government entertainment. In the last year I have run out of fingers and toes to count on for all the political disasters that have occurred.  It’s more entertaining than any TV show or movie you’ll watch in the next 20 years.”

A Canadian Spring for Harperland?
http://www.ipolitics.ca/2012/05/02/michael-harris-a-canadian-spring-for-harperland/

This is not “strong, stable government” a la Harper’s PR mantra. It is oppressive, dictatorial regime-building that would do any petro-state proud.

It is also the de-confederation of the country and the death spiral of independent information bearers. The war machine is more important than the social safety net. Canada can apparently have $45 billion jets and $800,000 military fly-overs, but must rein in the Old Age Supplement and cut food inspectors.

Suzuki and Tree-Huggers: Prepare for War
http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/gerald-mceachern/suzuki-foundation_b_1457523.html

THE GAME is over. It’s now all-out war.

This week, David Suzuki and his foundation came under attack by the ironically named Ethical Oil group, a new American anti-environmental video has been making the rounds online, and the $500,000 Koch brothers contribution to Canada’s right-wing Fraser Institute made the news.

CSIS freed from final shreds of oversight

If you are a Canadian citizen, landed immigrant or refugee to this country and you are even the least bit aware of the rights and civil liberties that Canada affords you, then you should be deeply worried today.

Elizabeth May – How the Conservatives stole environmental protection

The single biggest assault on environmental law was tabled last Thursday morning in the House – to nary a whimper. No front page headlines. No media interviews for Opposition parties for the major networks. True, we will likely hear more outrage as people wade through the 428 page Budget Implementation Bill, C-38. But, for now, the Harper Conservatives have stolen environmental protection in plain sight.

Fisheries Act proposals draw fire from ex-minister

The former Tory minister responsible for the current Fisheries Act is openly criticizing his successor over proposed changes to the legislation.

Tom Siddon, who was minister of Fisheries and Oceans from 1985 until 1990 for Brian Mulroney’s Progressive Conservatives, says he is extremely concerned by the amendments being championed by Keith Ashfield, the current minister…..

“This is a covert attempt to gut the Fisheries Act, and it’s appalling that they should be attempting to do this under the radar,” charged Siddon, who said he’s sent several letters and attempted to make personal contact with Ashfield, but he hasn’t heard “boo.”

When the FBI closed in, party bosses asked him to resign from the Republican Leadership Council, told reporters that he had acted alone, and made it plain that they expected him to take the fall. Raymond dutifully kept his mouth shut until it was clear he was going to prison.
